What are the methods of rack processing?

The rack is divided into helical rack and straight rack. They are used in conjunction with helical cylindrical gear and straight cylindrical gear respectively. The racks tooth profile is a straight line rather than an involute, which is equivalent to an infinite cylindrical gear. There are many kinds of rack processing methods, each of which is based on the different requirements of material and rack accuracy before choosing the correct processing method.



There are two main ways of rack processing. For some racks with high precision and very high hardness, including heat treatment of materials and tooth profile processing, two wire cutting and two heat treatment of tooth profile are adopted. The first heat treatment is used to eliminate the internal stress of the rack material, and then the first wire cutting is carried out, leaving a 2 mm allowance for the rack profile; the second heat treatment is used to make the hardness of the rack profile meet the requirements of use, and then the two ends of the rack are surfaced with copper layer, in the car line and abrasion of the outer circle. After that, the second wire cutting is carried out to achieve the level of coaxiality between rack and outer circle. The rack is processed alternately by two heat treatments and two wire cutting cycles, which not only overcomes the problem of hardenability of the material after heat treatment, but also meets the requirements of hardness, ensures the requirement of high accuracy of the rack profile, and improves the coaxiality of the rack profile and the outer circle. So this method has a great advantage, that is to ensure that the overall hardness of the tooth profile can meet the requirements, at the same time, the accuracy of the tooth profile can meet the requirements of the design, which greatly improves the processing quality of the rack.



Rack processing largely determines the hardness and accuracy of rack, so we must strictly control the whole process of rack processing to ensure that the processed products can meet the requirements of use.
